Prospective randomized trial comparing shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy for management of distal ureteral calculi

چکیده

Study population The study population comprised adult patients with a solitary, radiopaque distal ureteral calculus below the bony pelvis, 15mm or less in diameter. Exclusion criteria were multiple ureteral calculi, solitary kidney, renal insufficiency, ipsilateral ureteral stricture, plan for simultaneous treatment of ipsilateral renal or contra lateral renal or ureteral calculi, active urinary tract infection, transplant kidney and uncorrected coagulopathy. In addition, women who were fertile and of childbearing age were also excluded from the study, owing to the risk of damage to the ovaries from SWL.

Prospective randomized trial comparing shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy for management of distal ureteral calculi.

PURPOSE We compared the efficacy of shock wave lithotripsy and ureteroscopy for treatment of distal ureteral calculi. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 64 patients with solitary, radiopaque distal ureteral calculi 15 mm. or less in largest diameter were randomized to treatment with shock wave lithotripsy (32) using an HM3 lithotriptor (Dornier MedTech, Kennesaw, Georgia) or ureteroscopy (32). ...

Management of upper ureteral stones exceeding 15 mm in diameter: Shock wave lithotripsy versus semirigid ureteroscopy with holmium:yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser lithotripsy

OBJECTIVES We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy and outcome of shock wave lithotripsy versus semirigid ureteroscopy in the management of the proximal ureteral stones of diameter exceeding 15 mm. METHODS During the 2009-2014 study period, 147 patients presenting with the proximal ureteral stones exceeding 15 mm in diameter were treated. Both shock wave lithotripsy and ur...

Optimization of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy Delivery Rates Achieves Excellent Outcomes for Ureteral Stones: Results of a Prospective Randomized Trial.

PURPOSE Management of ureteral stones remains controversial. To determine whether optimizing the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy delivery rate would improve the treatment of solitary ureteral stones we compared the outcomes of 2 delivery rates in a prospective randomized trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS From July 2010 to October 2012, 254 consecutive patients were randomized to extracorpore...

Minimally invasive stone surgery: percutaneous, ureteroscopic and extracorporeal approaches to renal and ureteral calculi.

The goal of treating renal and ureteral calculi is to achieve complete stone clearance with minimal morbidity. The treatment depends on various factors, including stone size, composition and location, clinical “patient factors”, availability of the equipment and the surgeon’s capability. Recent prospective trials suggest that ureteroscopy provides certain advantages over shock wave therapy (SWL...

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and transureteral lithotripsy in the treatment of impacted lower ureteral calculi.

INTRODUCTION We compared the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) with ureteroscopy followed by transureteral lithotripsy (TUL) for the treatment of impacted distal ureteral calculi. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 96 patients with solitary impacted distal ureteral calculi were assigned into 2 groups of treatment with SWL (42 patients) and TUL (54 patients) with a 6.9-F se...
